Internet T1 Lines Provide Fast Broadband Connections For Those That Have A Need For Speed

Internet T1 service connections represent fast broadband connectivity at speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps. T1 lines are normally installed by telecommunication carriers on a contractual basis. Customers lease the line for a defined period (monthly, quarterly or yearly). T1s are stable, always-on connections capable of allowing users to upload or download large files, including movies, in real time.

T1 lines are known also as DS1s. The classification system incorporates the signal generating equipment (T) and the signal rate plus format (DS). The T and the DS notations are interchangeable so that DS1 infers T1 and T1 infers DS1. A T1 is normally supplied using the existing copper telecommunications network rather than a fiber optic cable, but optical configurations are possible.

T1s are dedicated lines or reserved circuits to be accessed or used only by the individual customer to whom the line is leased. They are a comparatively expensive service targeted to commercial organizations with big volume, time urgent traffic demands. The high cost of T1 line is usually not justifiable by individual home users.

Typical T1 service customers include commercial Web sites, ISP firms, software developers, financial firms, universities and research facilities. A T1 line is one of the fastest non-optical broadband connections offered in North America.

T1 lines may be combined or aggregated to configure faster speed T2 and T3 lines. T3s, for example, consist of 28 separate T1s combined to form a two-stage multiplexed channel. To start, 28 separate T1s are multiplexed into seven individual T2s. Next, the seven T2s are multiplexed to form one T3 line. In some instances, T4 and T5 lines have been configured through similar aggregation.

T1 lines allow speeds of up to 1.5 mega bits per second (Mbps). T3 lines yield much speeds of as much as 45 Mbps. Fiber optic networks yield speeds of up to 100 Mbps.

T1s are broadband connections that are always-on, reliable and stable. They permit hundreds of computers to access the Internet simultaneously. Each T1 line has multiple channels, each channel having the ability to send data at 64 Kbits per second (Kbps).

Telecommunication providers usually supply T1 lines along with superior support services as defined in a customized service level agreement. The SLA commits the telco to guarantee the customer a stated online performance level. T1 connections are normally installed to form a major Internet connection backbone for the customer.

The technology for T1 connections was released in the USA by AT&T Bell Laboratories in the 1960s. Nowadays, T1 lines are available from most major telcos competing against each other as rivals.
